The great outdoors is calling

Although the temperatures have been capricious to say the least in the past few weeks, now is the time to get outside.Several day use areas and campgrounds opened at Corps facilities last week.

Thurmond’s nine campgrounds are open, while the majority of the day use areas will open April 27.

Hartwell boasts eight campgrounds with approximately 500 sites, and six of those campgrounds opened April 1; The rest will open May 1. More information about Hartwell’s day use areas can be found here.

Russell’s campgrounds are run by Richard B. Russell State Park and Calhoun Falls State Park.

Families: If you missed Thurmond’s youth hunt April 7, there’s still time to register for Russell’s 30th annual Kids’ Fishing Derby, April 21. The Blue Hole Recreation area cove is netted and stocked with fish. The free event runs from 8-11 a.m.

Stay tuned for more events at Savannah District projects later this summer.
